CRACKERS

CRACKERS

Hollywood, CA, Heavy Industry Publications., 1969. First and only Edition 1/5000. Original white glassine dust jacket. 115 black-and-white reproductions., 240 pages. Brown chipboard flexible covers.

This is Ed Ruscha's photo-illustrated narrative featuring noted Los Angeles fashion designer Rudi Gernreich, his frequent model Leon Bing, artist Larry Bell, and Tommy Smothers as models based on Mason Williams' 1967 text 'How to Derive the Maximum Enjoyment from Crackers' (which is printed on the inside rear flap of the dust jacket). Intentionally photographed as if a collection of film stills, this project served as the basis for Ruscha's 1971 film "Premium".

Dust jacket very soiled and browned as per pic plus crinkling on top edge. The chipboard cover also browned with a crease bottom right. Photo pages very good with light browning to edges and slight soiling on bottom left of pages due to repeated page turning.

VARIOUS SMALL FIRES AND MILK SOLD

Edward Ruscha's second artist's book is a humorous cataloguing of flames and a glass of milk.

Soft cover. White glassine wrapper with title printed in black on cover and spine, with glassine dust jacket. Photographs, artist's book concept and design by Ed Ruscha. Unpaginated (48 pp.), with 15 yellow-toned plates, and one black and white plate, printed by Anderson, Ritchie & Simons, Los Angeles. 7 x 5-1/16 inches. This second edition was limited to 3000 copies. [Originally published in 1964 in an edition of 400 copies.]

A sequence of fifteen images depicting lit matches, cigarettes, a gas stove burner, a blowtorch, a highway flare, etc., followed by the book's final, incongruous and delightful plate: a single glass of milk. Challenging the logic of classification systems, while continuing his efforts to redefine the role of photography in conceptual art, this artist's book stands as one of the defining contributions to the medium.

Good condition. Browning/yellowing of glassine dust jacket. Small tear top left. Rest of the book in good shape with very faint browning on top of cover.
